Hewett Chiu
Hewett Chiu is Chief Operating Officer at Fern Health. He was previously Executive Director at the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene overseeing the city’s public mental health and primary care clinical integration initiative – the largest operation of its kind in the United States. In addition, Hewett is the co-founder and President of the Academy of Medical & Public Health Services, where he championed a community-based approach to integrate clinical care with wraparound social services in addressing social determinants of health for high risk and vulnerable populations; and built a strategy consulting firm for public sector healthcare organizations.
An educator at heart, Hewett is certified as an Emergency Cardiovascular Care faculty from the American Heart Association, and previously, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. In addition, he practiced as a NYS EMS clinician and a New York State Medical Skills Examiner, where he approved clinical skills of candidates applying for their emergency medical services licenses. Currently, Hewett is Adjunct Professor of Health Administration at NYU Wagner teaching healthcare strategy and public sector management. He holds degrees in Neuroscience and Public Administration specializing in Health Law & Finance from New York University.
In addition, Hewett is certified by the Institute of Healthcare Improvement in Healthcare Leadership, Patient Safety, and Healthcare Quality Improvement. He is a Fellow of the Academy for Healthcare Management, a Member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and a Member of the American Health Lawyers Association in its Business Law & Governance Practice Group. In 2015, Hewett was named a Margaret E. Mahoney Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.
For his work on building the public health system, Hewett has been honored by President George W. Bush, the United States Congress, the New York Guard, the New York State Senate, the New York State Assembly, the New York City Council; profiled as one of the 10 Influential Asian Americans in the United States by Wells Fargo and World Journal; and had a video feature produced about his work premiering at the Ronald Reagan Federal Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C., among other honors.
