Karen Smith

Dr. Karen Smith is the Chief of the Division of Hospitalist Medicine and Medical Director for the School-based Telemedicine Program at Children’s National Hospital. Dr. Smith began her career as an army nurse prior to attending medical school at George Washington University. She completed her pediatric residency at Children’s National Hospital and was a founding member of the hospital medicine division at Children’s National. Throughout her career she has held several leadership positions to include Chief Medical Officer at The HSC Pediatric Center, a pediatric and rehabilitation hospital, in Washington, DC; Chair of the District of Columbia Children with Special Healthcare Needs Advisory Board, and President of the Medical Staff at Children’s National.

On a national level, Dr. Smith served as the co-chair for the Hospital Medicine Special Interest Group for the Academic Pediatric Association and was a member of the Joint Council for Pediatric Hospital Medicine. In honor of her contributions to hospital medicine she was selected to receive the 2020 Excellence Award in Clinical Leadership by the Society of Hospital Medicine.
