Michelle Segar, Keynote Speaker

Michelle Segar, PhD, MPH, MS, behavioral sustainability scientist and author of No Sweat! How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness, directs the University of Michigan’s Sport, Health, and Activity Research and Policy Center.

Long before this became an urgent business and healthcare imperative, Segar was studying the science and practice of creating sustainable changes in lifestyle behaviors among consumers, patients, and employees. Her provocative and counter-intuitive insights on how to achieve the consistent decisions that underlie sustainable behavior change are based on a deep understanding of how to convert complex science into easy-to-use methods from over 25 years of work on this topic.

Segar designs next-generation messages, concepts, tools, and curriculum using an integration of the latest science with insights from the marketing and talent development fields. Her “rebranding health as well-being” call-to-action has been changing policies, programs, and practice across the healthcare, corporate wellness and fitness industries. Her organizational clients include Kaiser Permanente, Beaumont Health System, EXL, Harvard, National Business Group on Health, and Walmart.

A respected researcher and the bestselling author of No Sweat, Segar is a sought-after speaker, consultant, and lifestyle coach, and is frequently interviewed by the national media.  She holds four synergistic degrees: PhD in psychology focused on motivation, goals, and sustainable behavior change; MPH in health behavior/health education; MS in Kinesiology; and BA related to the role of culture and socialization in beliefs and behavior.

She lives with her husband and son in Ann Arbor, MI. She ran with the Olympic Torch at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
